Guidance Counselor – St. Mary’s Catholic High School – Phoenix, AZ


Guidance counselors at Saint Mary’s provide academic advising and support, mentorship, and college planning for all high-school students. They are responsible for ensuring that students have a successful transition to their post-secondary environment. This function manifests itself in various ways in the life of the school.
Some of the Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
• Advise students on courses to take in light of graduation requirements and post-secondary plans
• Track all high-school students’ credits to ensure yearly grade promotion and on-time graduation
• Implement Academic Probation policies and develop remediation plans
• Manage all student course requests and enrollment
• Assist with development of Master Schedule
• Oversee and implement quarterly study halls
• Serve as liaison with summer school classes and enrollment
• Work with Admissions to place freshman in appropriate course levels
• Develop college workshops for parents and provide individual parent counseling to answer questions regarding high-school curriculum, college acceptance, and application process, etc.
• Advise students individually and in groups about college options and help them to evaluate their interests for the initial selection of a college major and essay writing
• Process college application documents and write letters of recommendation for admissions and/or scholarships
• Network with colleges, including travel to schools; Coordinate college visits to campus
• Coordinate test prep for college admissions
• Coordinate and administer PSAT and AP tests, and provide post-test counseling to develop test prep for SAT and/or ACT
• Manage Naviance subscription and update data regularly (at least 1X every semester)
• Update the school’s website with college visits and other important counseling events
• Track important data, such as college acceptances, scholarships, etc. and create a mid-year and end-of-year report
• Participate in continuous school improvement, school meetings and in-services, and Diocesan sponsored in-services


Minimum Qualifications:
Preference given to Catholic guidance counselor
If Catholic, willing to make a public Profession of Faith
If Non-Catholic willing to sign a Profession of Faith
Preferably holds a Master’s Degree
Preference for at least three years’ experience in academic and college counseling
Preference is certified by the Arizona State Department of Education and meets applicable NCA requirements
Current FBI Fingerprint clearance card
