JOB DESCRIPTION

St. Michael Academy (SMA), a Catholic Classical Academy in Petoskey, Michigan is looking for a brilliant, energetic, and faith-filled educator to teach multiple courses in our Math and Science Curriculum, including Chemistry and Physics in the science field; and Pre-Calculus and Calculus in the math field. The position would commence January 6, 2020.

In September 2019, St. Michael Academy joined the Chesterton Academy Network of Catholic Classical Schools. As such, we have adopted their outstanding curriculum, including their math and science modules. These materials form the basis of the courses that the applicant will be asked to teach, both spring semester 2020, as well as in future years.

This teaching position has two phases: phase one, a science substitute job for the spring 2020 semester; and phase two, a math/science full-time job beginning the fall 2020 semester

PHASE ONE. For the second semester of the current academic year, the incumbent would function as a substitute teacher for our Chemistry and Physics courses, completing the program of instruction designed by our current science teacher who will be on maternity leave. Second semester duties would also include math and science tutoring, as well as “prepping” assigned courses for the 2020-21 academic year. Additional duties in support of the mission of the Academy will be assigned, as they are for all full-time SMA faculty.

PHASE TWO. Beginning the first semester of the 2020-21 academic year, the incumbent will prepare two individual math courses for instruction within the SMA curriculum. Precalculus and Calculus are the preferred courses, but other options include Geometry and Statistics. The incumbent will also prepare two individual science courses for instruction, ideally Chemistry and Physics, and/or possibly Astronomy and Introduction to Scientific Methods.

The ideal candidate will possess both teaching experience and a commitment to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church. As a growing classical high school that employs both the Trivium and the Quadrivium, we are interested in attracting candidates with a passion for interdisciplinary learning that produces “Smart Saints” – who can spread the Gospel and pursue their educational and evangelical vocations with zeal and aplomb.

Established in 2013, St. Michael Academy is the first Catholic high school in the Little Traverse area since 1972, and Northern Michigan’s only high school offering a Classical Curriculum. SMA strives to develop the whole person, cultivating academic, moral, and all-around excellence in its students, from within a caring and attentive environment.
