Institute Update
The Institute has been very busy lately, and will continue to be so
through the summer. In April, the Institute’s booth at the National
Catholic Educational Association in Anaheim, CA, introduced our work
to many teachers and principals around the country. President
Michael Van Hecke and I were joined by Institute public relations coordinator,
Karen Walker, handing out brochures and samples of our newsletter.
Many expressed interest in our programs, especially our Academic Retreat
for Teachers.
Two weeks later, I was joined by Dr. Kevin Schmeising of CatholicHistory.net
in Pittsburgh, as we presented an integrated workshop for the diocesan
religion and social studies teachers. I emphasized the importance
of giving Catholic students pride in their history as a means of strengthening
their faith, while Dr. Schmeising went through the principles of Catholic
social teaching.
Last week found me in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, for an ecumenical
educational summit hosted by Leigh Bortins and Classical Conversations. Mrs.
Bortins’ organization provides academic programs, events, and services
to local Christian home school communities. The gathering provided
an opportunity for educational leaders to present their programs to
one another and begin the important networking process. I enjoyed
getting to know Andrew Kern of the Circe Institute, Kris Mauren of
the Acton Institute, Martin Cothran of Memoria Press, and Adam Andrews
of the Center for Literary Education. I am excited to see how
many materials are becoming available for those who want to offer an
education that develops mind and heart.
Next month will find me in Grand Rapids, Michigan, for the Acton University,
learning more about Catholic social teaching. Later in June I will
be giving a workshop in Vancouver, BC, Canada, for St. Jude’s Catholic
School. And, of course, I am eagerly anticipating July’s Academic
Retreat for Teachers in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. |
